Being a northwest resident, Alaska Airlines is usually one of my first picks for flying as I generally don't venture away from the west coast. Alaska serves a lot of smaller airports up and down the Pacific, and often flies non-stop or one-stop routes and more convenient times than many of the other carries. It is definitely a plus that I am not forced to connect at a hub airport just to get somewhere. In general, Alaska has performed well - show up early, ticket counter staff are friendly and professional, go to the gate, and on-board the flight attendants are likewise friendly. Nothing fancy, but not a horrible experience either. One thing in particular I like is the food service. OK - it is not a "meal", it is not heated airline food, it is not a "lunch". What Alaska's food service IS consists of a decent beverage selection (hey, I find it a big deal that they give me the entire can of Coke, not just half the can and take it away), and a decent upscale snack. Gourmet cookies and cheeses. Considering that many flights are under three hours, I can easily schedule a flight between breakfast and lunch, so I can grab breakfast at the airport, and find a decent restaurant for lunch at my destination. The aircraft fleet is average - mostly Boeing 737-400s and 737-700s. I haven't ridden on the 737-900s but they are simply longer. The MD-80s are older, I haven't ridden on one of those in a long time. Don't look for video screens, this is one of Alaska's cost-cutting methods, but I don't ride planes to watch movies. If I want I'll rent a DVD player at the airport, or just buy one now that they are cheap enough. Seat pitch is a little cramped. The planes I have ridden on seem to be fairly clean, not spotless but not filthy. The bottom line is that Alaska seems to promote an image that it is better than the other airlines, and well I don't quite buy that. They're average. They are good but you will not be treated like a first class passenger in coach. But I'll take them again, because they are convenient, reliable, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Particularly in the northern airports (i.e. Oregon/Washington).
